Missed Opportunity – Part 1

*Beep* *Beep* *Beep*

The alarm started to ring loudly, just as the clock struck 10.

Sleepy and cranky, Pia pulled her phone out from beneath her pillow and hit snooze. With a satisfied smile, she returned the phone to its hiding spot and snuggled into her pillow.

30 minutes later the alarm buzzed again.

Pia slid her hand underneath her pillow, groping for her phone. Seconds later, her hand brushed the hard, outer cover of her phone and she pulled it out in a flash. In an automatic gesture, she hit snooze yet again.

This time though, she peeked at the time.

“10:30 am”

Her screen displayed brightly.

Groaning loudly, Pia thought, “Shit. He’ll be here in 90 minutes. Get up! Get up! Get up!”

Lazily, she got up, stretching her arms wide. Slowly, she walked towards her vanity shelve and picked up a hair band. Bunching her locks into a loose bun, she tied it up. Next, she grabbed her toothbrush & toothpaste, picked up her face wash and made her way to the washroom.

10 minutes later, she emerged feeling fresh.

*Ping*

She noticed her phone light up.

A WhatsApp message from Karan was displayed on the screen. Smiling, she unlocked her phone and opened WhatsApp.

“Good morning beautiful. Can’t wait to see you. I’ll try to get done with work soon.”

Grinning, Pia responded, “Yay! Come soon!”

She kept her phone aside and opened her cupboard. After a few minutes of perusing its contents, she pulled out a grey tee and blue jeans. Snug, yet comfy, she pulled her hair into a ponytail, lined her eyes with kohl and dabbed her lips with a bit of nude gloss. Next, she pulled out a dainty pair of earrings and slipped on her two favourite rings. Happy with herself, she did a little twirl in front of the mirror. Then she picked up her bag, wore her sandals and left the house.

En route to the grocery store, she plugged in her earphones and hit play on her phone. “Power” by Little MixΒ came on and she started lip syncing to the song; jamming all the way to the store.

It was a quick 15 minute stop at the store. She quickly made her way through the aisles, picking up just the essentials. Bread, butter, cheese, biscuits and some cold pressed sugarcane juice.

30 minutes later, she returned home. Time went by so quickly that she didn’t notice it was 11:30 am already. Pia suddenly realised that Karan would be there in half an hour. She immediately kept her purchases aside and began to prep her quick snack.

2 slices of bread, slathered in butter, with a pinch of chopped green chillies and a slice of cheese – quick, simple and yummy. She made three sandwiches and decided to grill it once Karan came home.

She had just finished prepping her sandwiches when her phone began to buzz. She answered and heard Karan’s voice on the other line. “Hey! I’ll be there in 5 minutes. Come down,” he said. Pia replied in the affirmative and did a quick clean up of her prep station.

She made a dash to the restroom to wash her hands.

She also took a quick glance at herself in the mirror.

Hair tied up neatly – Check.

Make-up intact – Check

Cute outfit – Check.

Bright eyed and smiley – Check.

One more twirl and she was out the door.

Just as she made her way down to the verandah, she noticed Karan walking up the entryway. Pia’s face lit up and she leant in for a quick hug.

“Mmmm. You smell nice,” she thought aloud. “Thank you. You smell quite lovely yourself” came Karan’s quick response.

Pia tried to mask her quick blush as she ushered him upstairs.

Unlocking the door, she asked him to come in. She shut the door and turned to face him.

Just as she turned toward him, he pulled her into a long hug.

“Finally, I get to hug you properly,” said Karan. A speechless Pia blushed beet red as she returned the hug and whispered, “I’m so glad you came.”

They held on to each other for a good 10 minutes, before Pia slowly pulled away.
